July 24                  You may have seen her in the Live from the Met Broadcasts this past season, but now is your chance to see her Live at Westben.  At 7:30 pm, the Barn will be electric with the sounds of international opera star soprano Adrianne Pieczonka.  She is joined by mezzo soprano Laura Tucker and pianist Brian Finley.  Adrianne has performed leading roles at most of the major opera houses in the world including in New York, Milan, Vienna, Berlin, Munich and of course Toronto!  She has been awarded the Order of Canada and in Vienna given the highest honour of the Opera House, Kaemmersaengerin.  Opera Host Iain Scott will guide you through an evening of opera solos and duets from Mozart to Puccini.  Tickets and info: www.westben.ca, 705 653 5508 or toll free 877 883 5777.

July 24                  Lampworks Bead Workshop with Janice Brouwer: This introduction to Lampworking will cover safety, supplies, studio setup, the process and finishing, followed by a demonstration. July 25                  O’Hara Mill Pioneer Homestead presents Heritage Day 10 am to 4 pm at 638 Mill Rd., off Hwy. 2 north of Madoc.  Tours of the museum house, the woodworking and blacksmith shops, the one room school, the carriage house, pioneer log house and the new Visitor Centre.  Demonstrations of pioneer crafts and displays of working antique engines.  Refreshments and homegown entertainment.  Admission: $3 for adults, $1 for children.

Starting week of July 26   The main day for the 4th annual Purdy Country LitFest will is July 31 in Marmora.  This year’s Symposium, at the Marmora Library from 12:30 to 2:30 pm, will focus on the life and poetic legacy of Toronto poet, Ted Plantos, the Cabbagetown Kid.  Another Dam Poetry Reading will start at 4 pm on the island in the middle of the Marmora Dam.  That same day, Celebrate Marmora Day will feature displays by Artists In Motion along the Crowe River.  Events will also take place at ZenRiver Gardens in the hamlet of Malone, in the week leading up to Sat.  Info: zenriver@sympatico.ca.

July 27                  Art in the Gallery Workshop at the John M. Parrott Gallery, Let’s Try Grisaille, led by Cynthia Solomon, 9:30 to noon.  Paint a still life using a very limited palette and explore gray tone values.  Bring paint in titanium white, yellow ochre, raw umber and mars black, brushes, a canvas or board, an item to paint.  No sign up is necessary, everyone is welcome.  Fee: $3.

July 31 and Aug. 1 Arts on Main Gallery presents Paint the County, works by local artists, at the Black Prince Winery, 13370 Loyalist Pkwy., Picton.  Observe artists on July 31, as they take to the street and paint outside on the streets of Picton. A silent auction will take place at Black Prince Winery throughout the day, as the pieces are completed. Register               The Milkweed Collective PEC announces a one-day Art Without Borders Workshop for Teachers, with Founder, Austin Clarkson and Artist/Teachers of the PEC Milkweed Collective, Aug. 25, 9:30 am to 4 pm, at the John M. Parrott Gallery, Belleville Library. The workshop is for primary, junior, and middle school classroom teachers who wish to get in touch with their creativeness and thereby encourage the creativeness of their students. Background in art is not necessary - only the willingness to be open to the creative process. The theme of Art Without Borders focuses on how art media can combine the reason with the imagination in many subject areas.  Cost is $50, which includes art materials. Aug. 14 and 21   Unlocking the Mystery of Realism with Bruce St. Clair: learn to paint in acrylic and oil. Sign up for our beginner classes: Saturday August 14 and 21, from 11am to 5pm. This two-session workshop is filled with the how-to's of realistic painting, including the fundamental dynamics of accurate drawing, colour creation, effective composition and the discriminating use of photo references.
