Notice…  Due to the surprising and unexpected success of The Artist this awards season, the distributor has restricted its release to the Film Circuit in centres where there is a multiplex theatre. The Quinte Film Alternative will therefore be unable to screen this film on Feb. 15 as originally scheduled.  Monsieur Lazhar, Canada's Academy Award nominee in the best foreign language category, will be shown on Feb. 15 and The Artist has been requested for March 28.

Deadline May 14     Nominations are being accepted for the 2012 Quinte Arts Council Arts Recognition Awards The QAC wants to hear about individuals, groups or businesses that have shown consistent and outstanding support for the arts in Quinte.  All it takes are 250 words on why the nominee should be considered and at least two letters of support. Anyone may nominate those that have produced, supported and/or promoted the arts within the Quinte community. Previous nominees who have not received the award may be resubmitted. Past recipients have included visual artists, musicians, writers, actors, volunteers, musical and artistic directors, business leaders and corporate sponsors. See the names of past recipients on the QAC website.  Nomination forms are available from the QAC office at 36 Bridge St. E, Belleville, and on the website: www.quinteartscouncil.org.

Deadline Feb. 24     The village of Warkworth is hosting its second annual Warkworth Art in the Park Juried Show and Sale on May 19 and 20 at Mill Creek Park.  Artists working in many different media (ceramic, fibre art, fine art, glass, jewellery, metal, photography, sculpture and more) are invited to apply for participation and a great opportunity to display and sell work in a magnificent venue taking place during part of Victoria Day weekend.  www.warkworthartinthepark.ca

Feb. 4       Fusion, Glamour Junkie and Glass Art Designs are moving to a new downtown Belleville location on Feb. 4.  They are open for business at 282 Front St. until Jan. 20, then they will open up on Feb. 4, 11 doors down the street at 250 Front.

Feb. 19     Prince Edward Community Theatre is holding open auditions for its upcoming May production, Leading Ladies by Ken Ludwig at 1 pm at Athol Town Hall, Cherry Valley.  No preparation necessary, just come out and read.  Cast of Characters are Jack- a young actor, able to dance (25-40’s), Leo- a young actor, able to dance (25-40’s), Meg- a young lady in her early 30’s, Duncan- local Minister, mature age, Audrey- a young lady in her 20’s, Doc- local Country Doctor, mature age, Butch- Doc’s son, young man in his 20’s to 30’s, and Florence- extremely old, poor vision & very crusty.  Directed by Lynn Fennell.  Show dates May 4, 5, 11, 12 at Mt Tabor Playhouse.  For more information on the show or the audition process, call Lynn at 613-476-5925 or Jen Goodman at 613-393-5755.

Feb. 10  Pianist Rick Penner will perform the music of Kurt Weill in the Parrott Gallery, Belleville Library, 10:30 to 11:30 am, accompanied by Matt Snell, Kay Olsen and Debra Tosh.  Free admission.

Feb. 10 and 11         Albert College will present The Laramie Project at 7:30 pm at their 160 Dundas Street West location in Belleville.  Based on a true story, The Laramie Project tells the story of a brutal hate crime inflicted upon 21-year-old university student, Matthew Shepard, in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. The play was written by Tony Award-winning playwright Moises Kaufman and is based on over 200 interviews conducted with Laramie residents by the Tectonic Theater Company and is currently one of the most performed plays in North America.  Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Deadline May 17     Ontario Fidelis Alpha is now accepting applications for the Orma Tipper Arts Award in Music and/or Drama.  This award is intended for persons of amateur status currently studying music and/or drama either privately or within the elementary or secondary school system.  Groups may also apply.  Teachers may apply on behalf of their students.  For information or an application form call 613-962-3896 or 613 354-4248.  There is no entry fee.  Applications must be postmarked by May 17, 2012.

Deadline Mar. 15     The Canada Council for the Arts is accepting applications for project grants up to $20,000 for contemporary fine Craft artists and curators.  This granting program provides support for research, professional development, production, networking and career development activities for Canadian, professional artists and curators (for research only) making a contribution to contemporary fine craft. Feb. 11 to 26            Spirit Borne is the performing arts expression of Quinte Youth Unlimited. 40 teenagers will perform a message of hope through song, dance, and drama.
