The Quinte
Arts Council and the John M. Parrott Art Gallery present the Third Thursday Arts
and Culture Jam on Thursday, May 15 beginning at 7 p.m. in the galleries on the
third floor of the Belleville Library on Pinnacle St., downtown Belleville.
The jam will
begin with excerpts from the Belleville Theatre Guild’s upcoming production of
the musical, Gypsy, starring Olivia Lloyd, Debra Tosh,
Al Zaback and Jenica Hammett. Then we’ll see
excerpts from Richard Turtle’s new play, Burying the Hangman, a
play that has been receiving much buzz and great reviews.
The popular musical
Gypsy by Arthur Laurentis, with
lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and music by Jules Styne, is the story of the
hard-driven stage mother, Mama Rose, and her daughter Louise who becomes the
1930's burlesque queen, Gypsy Rose Lee. Wonderful musical numbers include
Let Me Entertain You, Everything's Coming Up
Roses, Together, Wherever We Go and many more.

Burying the
Hangman opens on a
Montreal street in 1938 where the 73-year-old Arthur English, who used the
pseudonym Arthur Ellis, reflects on his past. As a youth in England he witnessed
his first public hanging and later as a member of the British Army he earned an
exemplary reputation as a hangman. This led to his being approached by the
Canadian government to become the country’s official executioner. He would
ultimately replace John Radclive, a hard-drinking man, not know for his
subtleties nor for his patience. But sadly Arthur English would be remembered
largely for a single botched hanging in Montreal that ended his long career.
Richard Turtle
was a staff reporter, photographer, columnist and editor for numerous
newspapers, magazines and periodicals before moving to the Quinte area where he
continues to write.
