DIGITAL
MEMORIES
(PHOTOGRAPHY)
I have a passion for living
things and photography is a wonderful outlet for this passion. I love to
record special moments with my camera and capture that
‘split
second’
in time when something magical happens. I enjoy spending time around
children, watching the way they interact with each other and their
fascination with the world around them. Candid photos are my favourite as
they truly capture the “spirit
of the moment”.
We seem to be in such a
hurry these days, rushing about with our daily lives and commitments.
When I pick up my camera and look through the lens, it changes my
perspective and the way that I see things. It encourages me to slow down
and notice the little things, rather than being preoccupied with the
“whole
picture”.
I was very pleased to have
one of my photos, “Patterns
in Nature II”,
chosen for Visual
Expressions 2008 this year.

(SILK PAINTING)
I have
always loved natural fibres and was introduced to working with silk by the
artist, Sherry Pringle. I work with imported French dyes and a wide range
of silks as it is woven in a variety of textures and weights (or
mummies). Silk is a wonderful fabric to work with as the interaction
between the fabric and dyes can be somewhat unpredictable and the
possibilities are endless. In order to
‘set’
the dyes and make them permanent, the fabric is carefully wrapped in
tissue and steamed for an hour. Then the piece is hand washed to remove
any excess dyes and it is ready to frame or wear. Silk paintings need to
be framed behind glass, like a watercolour, to protect the fabric from
dust and it is important that the fabric does come into contact with the
glass. I have painted birds, flowers, landscapes and animals as well as
fabric designs for cushions, scarves and blouses. On occasion I have been
able to combine my interests by doing a silk painting based on one of my
photos.
