Amélie Koning de Bourbon
I was born in Indonesia, educated in the Netherlands and came to Canada in 1960. After obtaining a degree in Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague, the Netherlands, I exhibited solo and participated in group exhibitions throughout the Netherlands with oils, watercolours, mixed media and graphic art. Fabric painting in the form of batik was introduced to me in 1970. When in Germany for two years I painted extensively in that discipline as well as taught that technique at the Volkshochschule in Lahr. I had a solo exhibition in Lahr in 1974 with large batik paintings.
After returning to Toronto I studied the technique of “hand-painting on silk” or sometimes called “French dyes on silk”. This technique has fascinated me for 30 years. It is an ever evolving process which involves special silk dyes (mine are from France) that can be diluted to different intensities of colour. It is painted onto the silk with brushes, much like making a watercolour. A variation of the technique is to add sea salt when the dye is still wet to obtain a certain texture-like effect and the result is always a one-of-a-kind piece, as wearable art or as a painting. “Amélie Silks” has been established 30 years ago as a retail and wholesale business. My boutique in Bloomfield, Prince Edward County, in Ontario was opened in 1997 and has a growing clientele of discerning customers who keep returning because of the high quality and uniqueness of the products. After moving into the County my husband Steven, a retired educator, has become a prize-winning commercial apple grower. I have become a member of the large and growing artistic community. I am a member of Gallery One-Twenty-One in Belleville which is a coop of artists, where I exhibit many different media i.e. oils, watercolours, graphic art, silk painting and mixed media. As a member of the Prince Edward County Studio and Gallery Tour we are encouraging visitors to this beautiful part of Ontario to see the artists and artisans at work.
