My interest in photography began when I was 14 years old. During a family vacation, I was handed the family camera and was unofficially designated the trip photographer. I loved it! A few images turned out reasonably well and so I continued to experiment and learn the technical aspects of the craft. Upon graduation from High School, I attended Ryerson Polytechnical Institute where I received a Degree in Photographic Arts in 1987. On seeing the work of photographers such as Ansel Adams, Paul Caponigro, Minor White and Edward Weston, I was awestruck by the emotional depth of well-crafted, clearly-seen B&W photographs. I love the transformative nature of the process, the challenge of seeing pattern, shape and tone in the constant flow of life, and the power of organizing random elements into an object for contemplation. Equally, in the act of making and viewing photographs, I relish the stillness and meditative state of mind in those moments, a restful attention that replenishes my spirit. |
