Mary is an energetic and
gregarious lover of nature’s treasures. She has devoted much of her
painting life to interpreting the natural beauty that surrounds us all.
She started her artistic life
in school in London, England, where she studied to be a teacher and
concentrated on needlecraft and art. She also participated in amateur
dramatics doing set design and decoration, as well as costume design.
After graduation she taught
primary school for several years in England and in Germany before
emigrating to Canada in 1969. She taught primary school in Oshawa, Ontario
and got involved in amateur dramatics with the Oshawa Little Theatre where
she met her husband, John. Since the birth of their son, Martin in 1972,
she has worked on developing her artistic talents by taking courses and
attending workshops while devoting most of her “free” time to painting.
The “un-free” time was also devoted to volunteer work for various cultural
development organizations, constantly trying to get the community more
involved in the appreciation of all manner of arts and crafts.
She has shown works in
galleries and group shows all around the Ottawa Valley and now in Prince
Edward County. Her customers all appreciate the loose, flowing and
sometimes impressionistic interpretation of our world that sometimes goes
unnoticed in our rush through daily life. She is continuing to develop and
her newer works deal with mixed-media interpretations of the world as she
sees it.
Mary also found time to teach
watercolour at night school for both the Ottawa School Boards, as often as
four nights a week. She has since retired. She is a past-president of
“Arteast” and is an honorary lifetime member of the Gloucester Arts
Council, both near her former home in Ottawa. Since moving to Prince
Edward County she has continued to produce and sell her wonderful
interpretations of life. |
